Turner from the Tate - the making of a master

Turner from the Tate, offers a once in a life time opportunity to experience the iconic paintings of J.M.W. Turner (1775 – 1851), one of Britain's greatest artists.

The exhibition displays the breadth of Turner’s talent and what makes him one of the greatest, if not the greatest, landscape painters of all time.

The last time a significant exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s work was seen in Adelaide was for the first Adelaide Festival in 1960. It’s fitting then that Turner from the Tate, a co-curated exercise between the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Tate, is shown as part of the 2013 Adelaide Festival.

The exhibition provides an overview of the artist’s development and offer insights into his working life and practices.

The exhibition features 110 works, including 40 oil paintings and 70 works on paper, and will convey how Turner established himself as a master of the European landscape tradition. Viewers can expect masterpieces such as Sun Setting Over a Lake (c. 1840), Venice, Bridge of Sighs (c. 1840) and my favourite Burial at Sea.

In the watercolour studies Colour Beginnings Turner experimented with colour and, while these works are small, they leave an impression on you.

Turner, like many other great masters, has had an enduring legacy and his vision has transcended time. He was incredibly ambitious right from the outset of his career and was really conscious of wanting to be an artist and what it would take for him to be a great artist.

Turner from the Tate: The Making of a Master will be exhibited at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide (8 February – 19 May 2013) and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (1 June – 8 September 2013).
