What makes a great occasional chair? It needs to be versatile, beautiful from all angles, light and easily accessible. It also has to be comfortable, you don’t want to offer a chair to a guest and have them walk away with a sore back.
Occasional chairs, also known as accent chairs are the most flexible and functional components of a room design as they are chairs that are meant to be used occasionally only. They can also serve as an accessory to your furniture set, enhance the décor and are a great way to solve seating problems when you have visitors or guests.
It is unclear when the term “occasional chair” originated, but it certainly fits the usefulness of the chair. If you have more than the usual amount of people in the house, this is a nice alternative to folding chairs or simply having someone sit on the floor. The beauty of occasional chairs is that they are easily matched with design styles, so while they may not be of the original set as most of your furniture, they are neutral enough to prevent interfering with the overall style.
Personally, I recommend a brightly patterned or visually eye-catching designer chair in a contrast style and or colour to your décor, it will add artistic flair as well as personality to any room. Stand-alone occasional chairs are often found in eclectic or boutique designs.
Rather than being a specific type of chair, an occasional chair is more of a concept. The term can refer to anything that goes with a furniture set, but is not actually part of it. They can be used in dining rooms, bedrooms or even bathrooms. You will often find occasional chairs in hotel rooms for use as additional seating.
