NATURALLY SOPHISTICATED - how to get the organic design decorating style

The sole purpose of the organic design style is to be at one with the environment around you

Organic interior design is described as raw, earthy, rustic and textured in feel and atmosphere. It incorporates the fields, forests, sky and ocean while using natural light, nature’s forms and recycled materials in home décor, such as textiles, materials and accessories. The idea is to create a stylish environment, yet a relaxed space to enjoy.

If you’re the kind of person who grows your own vegetables, watches your carbon footprint, and is mindful of the delicate eco-environment in your own backyard, then this design style will suite you perfectly. Alternatively, by using components of the style you can add some casual sophistication to any room in your house.

Inviting Mother Nature into your home through design is an exceptional way to get back to basics, while infusing warmth, colour, purpose and practicality at the same time. Opening up the doors and bringing the outdoors in unlocks an endless stream of decorating possibilities.

The sole purpose of the organic design style is to be at one with the environment around you, which can mean reusing materials or looking for materials naturally found and produced in your area. While this helps your wallet, to do it well requires thoughtfully laid out room design, an exceptional eye for detail as well as quality finishing materials and products, such as extra- sumptuous cushions, generously full curtains and an array of ambient lighting.

To truly accomplish organic design is to engage all the senses, and pay respect to nature generally and work with its seasons in particular. Look for colours that are found naturally, like summer sky blues, cloudy whites, sun yellows, lavender purples, willow greens and rich earth tones, such as Taubman’s Willow Gum, Portland Stone and Mulberry Delight which will create a feeling of solidity and durability. With each changing season, look outdoors for vibrant interior design inspiration. For example, the colours and shapes in a blooming garden, and the lushness and texture of a grassy meadow can become creative inspiration for new curtains and blinds in the family room or a new paint colour for the kitchen.

Nature has a way of putting some of the most interesting colour pallets together; they can be found opposite or next to each other on the colour wheel. So if you are short on ideas take a look at a garden in bloom for inspiration.

One of the central features of natural or organic decorating is natural light. If windows are covered with heavy curtains and room-darkening blinds, the beauty and warmth of the sun is blocked, which also washes out the colour of your furnishings.

Plastic blinds and synthetic material are also taboo in natural decorating. Look for light- filtering fabrics such as summer-weight linens, Egyptian cottons and silks. If a room receives heavy sun, choose bamboo roman blinds or the ever-popular shutters made from rich solid woods, such as teak, oak or beech.
