I like a dark bedroom! I keep as many layers as possible between myself and the sun; I’ve even been known to hang blankets over the windows in hotels.
If you are like me and sleep better in a dark room there are plenty of alternatives to blankets, you just have to know what to look for.
Draperies and curtains - Draperies are a classic way to block the light in a bedroom as well as add personal style. Good quality blackout lining is a must, and it won’t add significantly to the cost, but I will significantly reduce your heating and cooling cost.
For greater flexibility consider pairing a translucent curtain/sheer with a separate blackout curtain, mounted back to back. That way you can get either filtered light or total darkness, depending on your needs. Also consider fitting the blackout curtain from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, assuring complete darkness.
Holland/Roller Blinds - One of the cheapest and most effective solutions is a blackout roller blind. For even greater darkness mount the blind so it trails behind the roller and affix it to the face of the window frame, so light can’t seep between the blind and the side of the frame.
If you're building a new home, consider installing a recessed above the window to hide the blind when it’s not in use. Or pair the blind with another treatment, such as a curtain, valance and or a pelmet.
Roman Blinds - If roller blinds aren’t to your liking, try blackout roman shades, like the one shown here.
If you want to keep those beautiful views from your windows during the day but need full privacy at night, then Roman Blinds are what you are looking for.
When drawn up they will give the appearance of being a pelmet, but when down they completely cover the window giving great block out and heat retention.
Shutters - Enhance the bedroom with elegant and functional shutters, but like blinds, shutters offer limited protection from light. For optimum opacity, go with a wider slat.
